What Is OpenMonero?

OpenMonero launched after LocalMonero shut down in May 2024, filling the gap for a web-based Monero P2P marketplace. It follows the same classifieds model: sellers post ads with their terms, buyers browse and initiate trades, and both parties negotiate via built-in chat.

Access: openmonero.com (clearnet) + .onion address (Tor)

Strengths

  • Zero trading fees
  • No KYC or email required
  • Clearnet + Tor access
  • Supports all payment methods
  • Escrow protection
  • Reputation import from LocalMonero
  • Self-custodial design

Considerations

  • Smaller user base (~1-5K vs LocalMonero's ~100K peak)
  • June 2025 breach (refunded, but trust-building ongoing)
  • Newer platform, features still evolving
  • Less liquidity than Haveno or XMRBazaar
  • Sell ads require XMR deposit to be visible
Security note: OpenMonero experienced a breach in June 2025. Affected users were refunded. The platform has since implemented additional security measures. As with any platform, use escrow for trades and don't store large amounts on any exchange or marketplace.

Getting Started

1

Create an Account

Visit openmonero.com and register. No email required — just username and password. Your account is active immediately.

2

Set Up Your Profile

Add your bio, trading experience, and supported payment methods. If you have history from LocalMonero or AgoraDesk, include your archived profile links (Wayback Machine). Set your homepage URL if you have one.

Request reputation import by contacting OpenMonero support with your old platform username and archived profile URL.

3

Create Ads

Buy ads (you want to buy XMR): Set your margin (e.g., -10% means you pay 10% above market), currency, payment method, min/max amounts, and trading terms.

Sell ads (you want to sell XMR): Same setup, but sell ads require an XMR deposit to become visible. This ensures sellers have funds available.

4

Trade

When someone responds to your ad, use the built-in chat to finalize details. Exchange Monero addresses (use subaddresses), confirm payment method, and agree on timeline.

Use the platform's escrow for first trades. Release funds only after confirming payment receipt.
