A hardware wallet stores your private keys on a dedicated device that never exposes them to your computer. Even if your PC has malware, the hardware wallet signs transactions internally — the keys never leave the chip.
Companion: Feather Wallet (recommended) or Monero CLI
Companion: Monero CLI only (no GUI/Feather support)
This is the recommended setup — best UX, built-in Tor, coin control, and full Ledger integration.
Open Ledger Live → Manager → Search "Monero" → Install. This installs the XMR signing app on your device.
Download from featherwallet.org. Launch it. Select "Create wallet from device" → Ledger.
Plug in your Ledger, unlock it, open the Monero app on the device. Feather auto-detects it.
Feather creates a wallet file on your computer. This contains your view keys (for balance checking) but NOT spend keys — those stay on the Ledger.
Receive XMR to your Ledger address. When sending, Feather prepares the transaction and the Ledger signs it. Confirm amount and destination on the Ledger screen.
Trezor requires the Monero CLI (command line). No GUI support.
Open Trezor Suite → Settings → Device → Install latest firmware. Monero support requires firmware 2.x+.
Get the official CLI from getmonero.org. Verify the GPG signature. Extract the archive.
Run: monero-wallet-cli --generate-from-device your_wallet_name --subaddress-lookahead 3:200. The CLI communicates with your Trezor to create the wallet.
The CLI works as usual — balance, transfer, address new. Transactions require Trezor confirmation (approve on touchscreen).

| Recommendation | Best for Monero | Good if you already own one |
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Small amounts (<$1K) | Cake Wallet (mobile) or Feather (desktop) is fine |
| Medium amounts ($1K-$10K) | Feather Wallet with strong passphrase + backed-up seed |
| Large amounts ($10K+) | Hardware wallet recommended (Ledger + Feather) |
| Untrusted computer | Hardware wallet essential — keys never touch the PC |
| Long-term cold storage | Paper wallet or hardware wallet |
Ledger Nano S+ with Feather Wallet is the best Monero hardware wallet setup for 2026. Easy setup, Tor built in, coin control, and the Ledger keeps your keys offline. Trezor Model T works but the CLI-only requirement makes it harder for most users.
For most people holding moderate amounts, a Feather Wallet with a strong passphrase and backed-up seed is perfectly secure. Hardware wallets add defense against sophisticated malware — worth it for large holdings.
