Honest review from a P2P trader with 683 trades. How Haveno works, is it safe, and which instance should you use?
Haveno is the best decentralized Monero exchange in 2026 and the closest thing to a LocalMonero replacement. The 2-of-3 multisig escrow is cryptographically sound. Two viable instances: RetosSwap (proven volume, lower fees) and DawnSwap (lower deposits, faster arbitration). I use both daily for EUR/XMR cash by mail and face-to-face trading. Main drawbacks: requires desktop app (no web version), needs initial XMR for security deposit, and the daemon can be resource-heavy.
Haveno is a decentralized, open-source peer-to-peer exchange for trading Monero (XMR) against fiat currencies and other cryptocurrencies. It's the spiritual successor to LocalMonero (shut down May 2024) and Bisq's Monero-focused fork.
Key properties:
This is Haveno's core safety mechanism. Every trade locks funds in a 2-of-3 multisig address where three keys exist:
To release the escrow, any 2 of 3 keys must agree. In a normal trade, buyer and seller both confirm → funds release. In a dispute, the arbitrator sides with the honest party and together they release (or refund) the funds. Neither the buyer, seller, nor arbitrator can steal funds alone.
This is mathematically secure. Unlike platform escrow (where the platform holds your money), Haveno's multisig means no single entity ever controls the funds. Even if the Haveno developers disappeared tomorrow, existing trades could still be resolved by any 2 of 3 keyholders.

| Maker fee | 0.5% Lower | ~1% |
| Taker fee | 0.1% Lower | ~1% |

Use both. RetosSwap for higher liquidity and lower fees. DawnSwap for the lower security deposit (5% vs 15% means less capital locked per trade) and faster dispute resolution. Running both simultaneously doubles your orderbook presence. I maintain active offers on both instances.
Haveno requires a security deposit in XMR to place or take offers. If you don't have any Monero yet, this creates a chicken-and-egg problem: you need XMR to buy XMR.
Solutions:
Cash by mail is my primary trading method on both RetosSwap and DawnSwap. The flow: buyer takes an offer → escrow locks → buyer mails cash (insured, tracked) → seller confirms receipt → escrow releases XMR to buyer. Typical timeline: 3-7 days for EU postal delivery.
In ~200 cash by mail trades on Haveno, I've had zero lost mail and two disputes (both resolved within 48 hours by the arbitrator in my favor). The escrow makes this payment method viable — without it, neither party would trust the other enough to mail cash.
For face-to-face trades in SW Germany, Haveno's escrow adds a layer of safety that pure cash exchanges lack. We meet, verify the cash, I confirm on my laptop, and the escrow releases. If something goes wrong at the meeting, neither party loses their side — it just goes to dispute.
| Threat | Risk Level | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Funds stolen by platform | Impossible | Multisig escrow — platform never holds keys |
| Funds stolen by counterparty | Impossible | 2-of-3 multisig requires arbitrator collusion |
| Counterparty never pays | Low | Deposit forfeiture + dispute resolution |
| Arbitrator collusion | Very low | Arbitrators have public reputation; collusion would destroy the platform |
| Software vulnerability | Low | Open-source, community-reviewed, based on battle-tested Bisq codebase |
| Privacy leak | Minimal | No KYC, Monero is untraceable, P2P network |
| Regulatory shutdown | Impossible | Decentralized — no server to shut down, no company to sue |
